A new scheme aimed at improving safety for motorcycle riders across the UK has won two prestigious accolades.

The government's Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) was bestowed with both the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award and the International Motorcycling Federation's annual road safety award.

SHARP works by giving riders advice on which helmet to choose both in terms of safety and visibility.

The aim is to reduce the amount of motorcycle deaths that occur on the UK's roads every year and with winter set to take hold of the country it is important for riders to remain extra vigilant when out on the highways.

Transport minister Robert Goodwill announced that SHARP would be picking up the accolade and added that the scheme could help to prevent 50 lives a year being lost.

SHARP was created by the Department for Transport in 2007 and has gone on to improve safety through correct helmet choice.
