It may be early days yet, but if figures from last year are anything to go by then 2013 could see the continued rise in popularity of small motorcycles and scooters.

Data from the MCI show a steady increase in the number of new registrations for vehicles of this type over the course of 2012.

This represents the second consecutive time in which this figure has risen year-on-year, highlighting the continued popularity of bikes of this kind.

According to the MCI figures, the top five best sellers for the year were all in the 125cc class or below.

Meanwhile, new registrations for bikes between 51 and 125cc climbed 8.5 per cent over the course 2012.

The data also showed an increase in demand for second hand bikes of this kind with the number of those in the 101-125cc range that are registered climbing from 154,00 in 2002 to 261,000 by the tail end of 2011.

Steve Kenward, chief executive of the MCI said: "The growth of smaller motorcycles and scooters would suggest that more people than ever are commuting on powered two wheelers."

This excellent news for the motorbike industry follows a recent sales surge in adventure sports bikes.
