A picture has recently been released for the new series of Dr Who which shows Matt Smith, as the Doctor riding down the Shard on a Triumph.

The Doctor is pictured riding down the recently opened London landmark with new assistant Clara Oswin Oswald, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

He appears to be riding a Scrambler, a retro-styled bike that is inspired by Triumph off-road motorcycles from the 1960s.

With its retro look and British heritage the bike is a good match for Dr Who, which is known for using classic symbols of the United Kingdom in many episodes.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the popular show, which is the longest running sci-fi series ever made.

The release of the image relates to a story from last year when they were spotted filming, with Matt Smith attempting to ride the motorcycle but falling off as he struggled to deal with the weight.

This is not the first time the Doctor has been associated with motorbikes, with previous incumbent David Tennant riding around on a scooter and early Doctor John Pertwee was known for his love of motorbikes, riding a Honda VT500E until he was 74.

The episode, which is called the Bells of St Johns, is expected to be shown on BBC1 in April, but as MotoGP fans will know, there is only one man who can be truly called The Doctor, and he comes from Italy.

The picture which shows the Doctor riding down the Shard can be viewed on the official BBC website
