Actor Tom Cruise has revealed his love of motorcycles after speaking about purchasing his first bike aged just ten years old.

Promoting his new film Oblivion on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, the Mission Impossible star told the talk show host that he bought a little Yamaha while his mother away on a business trip and hid it in the basement.

Things did not go well for young Cruise and his new bike as he ended up almost being seriously hurt in an accident.

He explained that he was planning on riding the bike across the front yard to impress his friends, then the throttle became stuck.

''Now I'm heading for the two cars. I'm like, 'Oh, no, no, no, no, no!' I managed somehow to sneak it right between the two bumpers. The bike went boom, stopped instantly, and I flew off into the next yard like Wile E. Coyote," Cruise added.

He told Leno that he had managed to keep the accident from his mother for years and only told her about it recently.
