Lightning Motorcycles announce fastest production motorbike in the world - and it's electric

The fastest production motorcycle in the world is set to debut this weekend (May 17th) - and it happens to be electric.

Carmel, California will see the debut of the Lightning Superbike LS-218 at the Quail Motorsport Gathering, after winning a host of prestigious events in the electric bike racing world.

Named for the model used by the team when it set the electric land speed record in August 2011, which hit an average 215 mph over two runs, the current LS-218 doesn't need a gearbox.

Instead it is powered by a combination of an electric motor, controller and battery back which can get up to 10,000 RPM. In terms of power, it can generate 200hp and 168 ft/lbs of torque.

That kind of power took it to victory in the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, where it beat every other bike, whether they were electric-powered or not.

"We believe that the LS-218 offers consumers the best of design, performance and value in today's market," says Lightning chief executive Richard Hatfield.
