Samsung Honda rider Alex Lowes secured a double victory at Donington Park over the weekend (7-8 September) to close the gap on current British Superbike Championship leader Shane Byrne.

Byrne did manage to secure two runner up finishes in the races, which helped him to maintain his current lead, but Alex Lowes is continuing to get closer after his fourth consecutive BSB win.

Shane was 0.1 seconds behind Alex in the first race, and only 0.05 seconds behind him in the second race after struggling to find a way past.

Afterwards Byrne said: "I did everything I could to get the win and although I'm never happy to finish second, this weekend's second places were as good as a win.

"Going into the Showdown, I have just a six point lead but we'll keep doing what we're doing and treat each weekend the same."

It is certainly shaping up to be an interesting finale to the BSB season, just as MCE had hoped when it first introduced new rule changes in 2010 as an attempt to add more excitement to the end of each season with dramatic championship finales that could go in a variety of directions.

Since the rule changes, each season begins with nine events for the main season, and after dropping their two worst scores, the top six riders become 'title fighters' and participate in 'the showdown' during the final seven races of the season.

This season's title fighters are Shane Byrne, Alex Lowes, Josh Brookes, James Ellison, Ryuichi Kiyonari and James Westmore.

Each title fighter begins The Showdown with 500 points plus additional points depending on their podium finishes during the main season.

The same main season scoring system then applies for the remaining seven races, where a rider gets points depending on their final position in each race, and an overall winner is eventually decided, usually in the final race of the season.
